Title

Aperiodic activity relationship with E-I balance and its alteration in Parkinson’s disease

Abstract

Excitation-inhibition (E-I) imbalance provides a valuable framework for understanding many brain disorders. However, a clear definition of E-I balance remains elusive, and it is currently unmeasurable in the living human brain (and challenging in animals). In this talk, I will discuss why the E-I ratio – defined at the population activity level – can be linked to the aperiodic (1/f) component of electrophysiological signals such as LFP, EEG, and MEG, along with recent findings on its alterations in Parkinson’s disease.

Pascal Helson did his PhD at Inria Sophia-Antipolis with a focus on modelling and analysing (mathematically and numerically) neural networks in which neurons interact through plastic synaptic weights. His current postdoc at KTH is part of the dBRAIN project and within Arvind Kumar’s lab. He is combining modelling and brain imaging data analysis in order to get more insights into Parkinson’s diseases.
