Abstract
Animals must retrieve memories of food-predicting environments and direct their spatial behaviour to ensure their survival. In mammals, pyramidal cells of the dorsal hippocampus provide a map-like representation of space. How these representations influence the behavioural expression of spatial appetitive memory is still unknown. Our latest work addresses this question by monitoring and manipulating neuronal ensembles from the dorsal hippocampus and the nucleus accumbens in behaving mice. I will present recent evidence showing a functional dissociation between the neuronal reinstatement of a memory and its behavioural manifestation, often assumed to be the same process. We found that hippocampal representations of space are indeed necessary, but not sufficient, to act on appetitive memory retrieval. I will also present mechanistic evidence showing the importance of a tripartite neuronal motif in the dorsal hippocampus-accumbens pathway for successful place-reward behavior.
